Managing Uncertainty in Projects: A Review, Trends and Gaps

Resumo

Nowadays an increasing number of projects are being developed in high complexity and uncertainty environment, requiring different approaches for project management: less rigid and more flexible. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to present a framework for managing uncertainties, through a systematic literature review. The developed framework, based on the contingency theory, suggests that approaches for uncertainty management are, in part, determined by the characteristics of the existing uncertainties. The responses for uncertainty can be driven by the cause or consequence of the uncertainties and those are chosen according to the ability to influence the cause, which is higher for internal uncertainties and lower for external uncertainties. The flexibility of the project management approach, in its turn, is impacted by the uncertainty degree.

She is a Master student in the department of Production Engineering, Polytechnic School, University of São Paulo. She is bachelor in Production engineering from the same university.

Marly Monteiro de Carvalho, Universidade de São Paulo

É professora livre docente da Escola Politécnica da USP, atuando na graduação e pós-graduação do Departamento de Engenharia de Produção, desde 1992. Coordena o Laboratório de Gestão de Projetos (LGP) (www.pro.poli.usp.br/lgp) e o grupo de pesquisa Qualidade e Engenharia do Produto (QEP) do CNPq. Coordena o curso de Especialização em Gestão de Projetos da USP. Autora de 12 livros publicados no Brasil e de diversos artigos. Possui livre docência pela Escola Politécnica da USP, pós-doutoramento em Engenharia Gestional pelo Politécnico de Milão (Itália) , doutorado e mestrado em Engenharia de Produção pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, e graduação em Engenharia de Produção Mecânica pela Escola de Engenharia de São Carlos da USP.
