Emotional intelligence and decision making: An integrative literature review

Abstract

Study Goals: To explore the theme of emotional intelligence in decision-making within applied social sciences, mainly in the administration literature, and to examine its connection with Herbert Simon’s proposal on rationality and decision-making.

Methodology: This integrative review sought studies on emotional intelligence and decision-making published in national and international open-access journals from 2008 to 2024. A total of 57 articles were collected from the databases Web of Science, Scopus, SciELO, SPELL, ANPAD, and Portal Capes, and 32 studies were selected.

Relevance/Originality: The research showed that emotional intelligence in decision-making should be further explored in the field of administration, as it can contribute to more rational decision-making. The study features authors from the Global South and North, which distinguishes it from other similar studies.

Main Results: Only two out of the 32 articles selected related to Herbert Simon’s work on bounded rationality and satisficing. Emotional intelligence positively influences decision-making, acting positively on risk perception due to optimism and personality.

Theoretical/Methodological Contributions: There are few studies in Brazil, and it constitutes an open field for administration. Integrative review should be adopted more frequently in administration studies, as it determines associations of themes and answers a specific question. The research demonstrates the interrelation between emotional intelligence and decision-making.

Social Contributions: The application of emotional intelligence in decision-making applies not only to the organizational field but also to people’s daily lives.
