Applying SMED principles for reducing setup times in a medical implant company: A case study.

In an increasingly competitive market, companies are looking for alternatives and strategies to stay active. Challenges imposed such as: cost reduction, product quality and shorter lead times mean that they aim at continuous improvement. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the principles of the Lean philosophy, through its tools, can achieve these challenges. The study was carried out by means of a case study in a company that manufactures medical implants located in the city of Rio Claro SP, from which it was possible to show the gains obtained by reducing setup times by eliminating activities that do not add up value and punctuating the gains obtained with the implementation of the rapid tool change system.
