Abstract

This therapy that uses animals as co-therapist is associated with conventional therapy, performed by a health professional. Cognition is considered as a complex collection of mental functions, including memory and reasoning. In this study, it was analysed the effectiveness of physiotherapy assisted by animals, and its major benefits, and the occurrence or not of improvement in cognitive decline in older people. This study was based on a literature review of books, indexed sites and newspapers of the last 15 years in order to approach the theme of therapy assisted by animals. The studies performed show that the simple contact with the animal is already enough to promote well-being. Some benefits of the therapy assisted by animals were already proven, such as the decrease of anxiety and mood improvement. This type of physiotherapy showed strong influence on the improvement of cognition, but there is a need for other studies to prove its real benefits accordingly.
