Abstract

Some patients with systemic diseases and taking some medicines need special care during dental treatment and, most the times, these conditions lead to modifications on the course of the dental clinical protocol. In order to know the incidence of these alterations in dental clinic, a survey was carried out with 445 patient files, at Nove de Julho University Dental Clinic. Amongst the archives of the patients it was observed that 209 were of the masculine sex and 236 of the feminine sex, among these 23.8% had presented systemic alterations and 26.06% made use of some type of medicine. The hypertension was the more frequent systemic disease and the most used medicine was antihypertension medications. We conclude that the systemic disease and the use of medicines are common findings in dental clinic, therefore the dental-surgeon and students must be prepared to modify the planning and execution of the dental treatment to deal with these situations aiming the patient’s health.
