Abstract

Obstetric groups from advanced nations have been evaluated the perineal massage as a possible way to increase perineal tissue stretching during the delivery. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of perineal massage preventing lacerations during birth. For this purpose previous studies from last 12 years were reviewed. It was concluded that the benefits of perineal massage during the last weeks of pregnancy has been very interesting, offering to medical groups and midwifery, especially for physiotherapists, information about the method for application in their prenatal therapy, despite of future studies be needed to provide answers about better frequency, time and technical methodology.
