Abstract

The general sensibility of the head, including intra-oral structures and temporomandibular joint (TMJ), as well as the masticatory muscles control are functions related to a group of nuclei comprising the trigeminal complex. Rhythm, movement directions and masticatory strength can be altered in some pathologies such as the oral motor disorders, among these nocturnal bruxism can be emphasized because it usually generates secondary TMJ disturbances. Mandibular movements are complex activities that are achieved by activation of motoneurons in trigeminal motor nucleus (MO5) that is located in pontine reticular formation, surrounded by a ring of premotor neurons called region h. Researches utilizing retrograde tracers have described that the distribution of premotor neurons innervating also are distributed in the brainstem and in forebrain areas related to stress and autonomic control. The understanding of these connections will be important to disclose some important aspects of the physiophatology of the oral motor disorders.
