Abstract

The efficacy of intraoral appliance (OA) in the treatment of sleep breathing disorders has been investigated rigorously during the last decades. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the OA in the treatment of moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), comparing the results of pretreatment basal polysomnography (PSG) with OA in situ. Seventeen patients, carriers of moderate OSA, participated in this study. The results showed a decrease of apnea/hipopnea index (AHI) and oxyhemoglobin saturation (SaO2), (p< 0.05). The results for the sleep stages were not significant, although indicating an improvement. We concluded that OA was a safe and effective treatment for OSA, improving the physiologic variables during sleep.
