Abstract

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of a finger-shaped tooth cleaner made of gauze compared with a conventional toothbrush, in the disorganisation of dental bacterial plaque of deciduous tooth eruption. Twenty babies, both sexes, aged 6 to 18 months old were randomly distributed in two groups: I – finger-shaped tooth cleaner, and II - conventional toothbrush. The dental bacterial plaque quantity was measured monthly by a PHP modified plaque index during three months. The results present a continuous increase of 51%, in initial examination, to 58%, in final examination of plaque index in group I, contrasting with a reduction, of the index in group II, of 49%, in initial examination, to 12%, in final examination. Analyzing the results, we conclude that the finger-shaped tooth cleaner must be used for hygiene of oral cavity of babies before the first deciduous tooth eruption, being the conventional toothbrush the ideal and effective instrument that should be used for the first deciduous tooth eruption.
