Osteoporosis: knowledge and prevention in UBS in the point of view of the coordinators of the administrative division of Pirituba (São Paulo city)

Preventing osteoporosis became important for public health because of the increasing number of elderly. Health units (UBS) are the most appropriate means to divulge people orientations about their treatment and prevention. Through a questionnaire, it was analyzed the knowledge and preventive practices related to osteoporosis, developed in many UBS of Pirituba (São Paulo city), which has the Family Health Program. We observed that in 5 of 11 UBS, nurses did not know how to determine numbers of diagnosed patients. When asked about the risk factors, all participants have chosen the correct answer, but it was clear the difficulty in detecting symptoms. In 5 UBS, early diagnosis and prevention are passed in indirect way with the general guidelines of other diseases. We conclude that is very important investing in primary education of these professionals, because the current activities do not supply the needs of population.Downloads
