The lack of orientation about breastfeeding during prenatal care visits may result in the occurrence of breast pain processes, influencing the early weaning. Our aim was to quantify the occurrence of these processes during the first 72 hours of birth, classify, and associate them with receipt or not of technical information during the prenatal visits. Among the 24 mothers evaluated, it was noted: physiological (33%) and pathological (25%) breast engorgement, physiological engorgement and fissures (21%), and only fissures (21%). These women, between 17 and 25 years old, were mostly primiparous, not exceeding the high school level of education. The presence or absence of breast pain processes seems to have relation to education and preparation of these women for breastfeeding during the prenatal period. The low level of knowledge and lack of information on breastfeeding indicate the necessity of an orientation program to pregnant women about the importance of breastfeeding.Downloads
