Abstract

The group that assists patients mechanically ventilated executes essential function in the control of the tubes pressure (Cuff) of endotracheal cannulas and pipes. This study intended to analyze the theoretical knowledge and the procedure of the group in handling the equipment. A questionnaire about technique of insufflation, measurement and frequency, ideal pressure and impact of inadequate pressure intracuff was answered by a random sample of 60 professional assistants. In relation to the technique inflation, the knowledge recommended related to the practice was 2.69 times higher (OR = 2.69 (1,15-6,37)), 61.7% use palpation of the external cuff to measure the intracuff pressure (OR = 35.44 (7,44-230,96)), demonstrating theoretical knowledge 35.44 times higher than employment practice. The professionals showed satisfactory knowledge in handling and in ideals intracuff pressures, but they do not use this knowhow, what suggests an elaboration of a protocol for careful in using endotracheal tube.
