Influence of age and obesity in the diagnosis of osteoarthritis of knee

Abstract

In this study, it is evaluated the influence of age and obesity in the diagnosis of osteoarthritis of knee, by the a questionnaire that diagnoses or not this type of disease, through calculation of body mass index and personal data such as age, in 40 elderly people who participate in the Grupo da Melhor Idade (Group of the Best Age) of the city hall of Ipameri (State of Góias, Brazil), in the Pestalozzi Association of Ipameri. With the questionnaire, it was concluded that 21 elderly people showed diagnosis of osteoarthritis, and 19 did not showed a diagnosis related to BMI. It is concluded that 15 elderly were normal weight, 10 were overweight, and 15 were obese and all they were over 60 years old. By the statistical analysis, it was concluded that age did not influence the diagnosis of osteoarthritis of knee because the average of the ages of those presented this type of diagnosis was similar to those who not presented. Through the analysis of BMI, it is concluded that the number of obese with this diagnosis was greater than the elderly people with normal weight who have not presented this diagnosis.
