Abstract

In the period from 1999 to 2004 six cities in the State of Paraiba (Brazil) were included in the PNCT (national program of control of the tuberculosis), being introduced in the DOTS (strategy of treatment directly observed) for the control of tuberculosis. The objective of this study was to analyze the taxes of cure, abandon, and deaths in the prioritary cities. The sample was composed by 1943 cases of patients with positive baciloscopy, of both sexes, aged over 15 and treated with the DOTS in the period described previously. The analyzed data, through the descriptive statistic, reveal that the sick people were treated, having less deaths and abandoning of treatment. The index of cure was above 90%. These results show the efficiency of the DOTS in controlling TB, in agreement with other studies of the same period, which present better indicators than the ones of self-administered treatment (TAA).
