Abstract

The dental eruption depends on a physiological balance; thus, a delayed or an early eruption may indicate a change in this process. Different factors can alter the normal chronology of eruption, these may be of local order, systemic or environmental origin. OBJECTIVES: This article presents the case of an 11-year-old patient with prolonged retention of lower primary second molars and consequent delayed eruption of their permanent successors. METHODS: The most import aspects of this alteration will be discussed, emphasizing its treatment, possible etiological factors as well as its clinical resolution. RESULTS: The approach of this case report was the teeth extraction of lower primary second molars considering the prior orthodontic management. CONCLUSIONS: The correct diagnosis through anamnesis, clinical and radiographic examination should be realized, just as measures to avoid a delay in the eruption of teeth and the impactation of the permanent sucessors.
