Abstract

The following article intends to analyze the origins of the curriculum guidelines (C.G.) proposed by the board of experts in Psychology. In order to do so, a brief history of Psychology in this country has been presented, including its development concerning the C.G approach to the issues involving professional training. This history dates back to colonial times and stretches through the period in which academic knowledge in Psychology begins to flourish and gives place to graduates at University level. From this ultimate period, the dispositions available in the minimal curriculum (whose validity starts in 1963) stand out. The curricula proposed by higher education institutions and the professionals that have graduated ever since have been made subjected to several analyses and many research debates and meetings in the field of Psychology. In December 1999, the board of experts published the final version of the C.G. in Psychology. These guidelines are analyzed considering the problems in professional training that have been detected by the production in this field and the growing commitment of Psychology in Brazil to a genuinely critical work.
