Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of the surface protection in roughness of glass ionomer cement used in Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART). Methods: Thirty specimens of glass ionomer cement Maxxion® R (FGM) was prepared following manufacturer’s instructions. As surface protect material we used: solid petroleum jelly; Cosmetic nail varnish; Surface protection agent G Coat Plus™ (GC Co.). After mixture the cement was inserted in metallic molds and after initial setting reaction the protective agents were applied and the specimens were immersed in artificial saliva for 24 hours. For roughness evaluation, a rugosimeter was used. Results: Mean values were then submitted to one way Anova test. Mean surface roughness values (Ra) were Solid petroleum jelly (0.71+0.48); Cosmetic nail varnish (0.74+0.23); Surface protective agent G Coat Plus™ (1.47+0.31). Conclusions: The glass ionomer cement roughness increased after G Coat Plus™ was applied.
