Abstract

Introduction: Fibromyalgia is a syndrome (FS) characterized for generalized musculoskeletal pain, presence of tender points, stiffness, fatigue, and disturbed sleep. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ultrasound (US) in pain, rigidity, quality of life and sleep in 4 patients with FS. Methods: The patients were submitted to pre and post treatment evaluations which verified the quality of life using the Short Form-36 Generic Questionnaire (SF-36), the amount of positive tender points and the pain, sleep quality and rigidity using Visual Analog Scales (VAS). After, FS patients were submitted to 10 US treatment sessions (1 MHz, pulsed 20%, 0,5w/cm2, 1 minute per tender point). Results: The results showed that the US induced a significant improvement in quality of life and sleep, a decrease in the pain and in the amount of positive tender points. Conclusion: The US induced improvement in symptomatology and in the quality of life and sleep in FS patients.
