Abstract

Introduction: In this study, we analyzed the emotional reaction of nursing staff to care for newborns in process of death in neonatal ICUs. Objective: The aim was to identify elements to improve the interaction of individuals with families of children and see how they deal with this process, to enhance nursing care. Method: This is a descriptive exploratory study with qualitative and quantitative approach. Results: We observed that sadness, helplessness, frustration and naturalness were the principal reactions cited by volunteers. Conclusion: The professional nursing, who cares for terminal patient, is not prepared to deal with his feelings nor give support the family in this situation, because issues related to death, most of the time, are not part of the curriculum of courses. It is suggested that the preparation of professionals on the subject is performed at the beginning of academic education, and that hospitals provide them with psychological support so they can deal with their emotions when caring for a terminally ill child.
