Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate which stretching technique confers greater hamstring flexibility gain. METHOD: Sixty volunteers from both the sexes, with age between 18 and 29 years were divided at random in six groups: G0 – control group, G1 – 1 minute static stretching; G3 – 3 minutes static stretching; G5 – 5 minutes static stretching; FNP3 – 3 hold-relax series, and FNP6 – 6 hold-relax series. The range of motion was evaluated before and after each session and before and two days after the training that was realized in five consecutive days. Post-hoc Newman-Keuls analyses of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze data. RESULTS: The results demonstrate increase of flexibility in groups G3, G5 and FNP6, in relation to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that, not considering the technique applied, the maintenance time of 3 minutes seems to be the main factor for the flexibility gain.
