Abstract

Introducion: Judo is a sport that requires intense physical activity, which may overload the muscleskeletal system. This might cause a high incidence of head, neck and shoulder injuries. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of signs and symptoms of dysfunctions in the masticatory system and pain in the craniomandibular and cervical regions. Method: Fifteen practitioners of judo were evaluated. These signs and symptoms were graded according to the clinical dysfunction index of Helkimo. Results: The results showed that the craniomandibular pain was more frequent during palpation and in the cervical region during active and passive movements. Conclusion: This study shows a high prevalence of dysfunction in the masticatory system and the craniomandibular and/or cervical pain among judo practitioners. This study suggests that these factors might influence their sporting performance.
