Abstract

Introduction: COPD is a respiratory disease characterized by chronic airflow obstruction, which is not fully reversible. Objectives: To determine the effect of LBP associated with corticosteroids in the treatment of pulmonary emphysema in rats. Methods: A total of 20 rats were divided into five groups of four animals (G1 control G2 papain; G3 papain + steroids; G4 papain + laser; G5 papain + laser + steroids). The groups G2 to G5 were instilled with papain intratracheally and waited ten days to generate inflammation, subsequently the animals were treated for ten days with LBP 830 nm GaAs and corticosteroids. For data analysis was performed histopathology. Results: The group treated with corticosteroids (G4) had no improvement in inflammation, and the group treated with steroids associated with the use of LBP (G5) had a significant improvement of inflammation, mild to severe emphysema. Conclusion: Induction of pulmonary emphysema by papain can be proven, and the LBP associated with corticosteroids attenuated inflammation.
