Prevalence of smoking university students and their interrelationships

Introduction: Tobacco is the most used drug in the world and its use by teenagers and adults has increased. Objectives: To identify the prevalence of smoking among university students and its association with their habit of consuming alcohol and exercising. Methods: Interviews were conducted with 360 university students of both genders, aged between 18 and 24 years, having been assessed in relation to smoking, nicotine dependence level and other associated habits. Results: The prevalence of smokers was 6.9%, and there was no difference between genders. The majority of smokers did not exercise and had low and very low level of nicotine dependence. It identified significant association between smoking and alcohol consumption. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop programs that encourage tobacco cessation, and the dissemination of information on the dangers of tobacco and alcoholic beverages.Downloads
