Abstract

Objectives: To compare, between sexes, cardiovascular risk factors of university students freshman in physical education. Methods: The t-Student test was used to analyze one day weekly differences in time spent in moderate and vigorous physical activity and in simply seated position. Frequency distributions for variables: marital status, socioeconomic status, smoking, alcohol consumption, dietary habits, physical activity, BMI, WC and blood pressure were performed. Different proportions of the level of physical activity and cardiovascular risk factors between genders were analyzed using the chi-square test or Fisher's exact, significance at p<0.05. Results: The men had high blood pressure (17.7%) in higher proportion (p = 0.03) compared to women (7.5%), and spent more time (p<0.01) in activities in sitting position on weekly day (6.41 ± 2.1 hours) related to women (5.21 ± 1.5 hours). Conclusion: Compared to women, the men spent more time in sitting activities one day weekly and had high blood pressure in higher proportion.
