Abstract

Several neuroanatomical and biochemical alterations have been reported in patients with different kinds of psychiatric disorders, like depression. These findings have conducted many researchers to identify which would be the pattern of abnormalities of each psychiatric pathology. The objective of this paper is to review the literature about the main neuroanatomical abnormalities observed in unipolar and bipolar patients. The main structures reported were prefrontal, frontal and temporal lobus, orbitofrontal cortex, thalamus, amygdale, hippocampus, basal ganglia and hypothalamushypophysis-adrenal axis. Although many controversies in the literature, there is an important expectation about a differential pattern in the neuroanatomy of unipolar and bipolar patients, suggesting that these disorders are biologically different.
