Effect of walking on sleep patterns of patients with fibromyalgia syndrome

Introduction: The fibromyalgia syndrome is characterized for cronic pain and poor sleep quality and the physical exercises help in the treatment. Objectives: To investigate the effects of walking on sleep in patients with fibromyalgia. Methods: Participated 11 patients mean age 54 ±7.35 years. We used the Socio-demographic and Clinical Questionnaire and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. A descriptive and inferential analysis of the data was conducted, and the Wilcoxon test to detect differences in sleep quality (p <0.05) was used. Results: After eight walking sessions, there was improvement in subjective quality and reduction of sleep disorders, but the use of sleep medications increased. As for other components, there was improvement in latency, duration, habitual efficiency and daytime dysfunction, but not to a significant extent. Conclusions: Despite the short time of practice of walking there was significant improvement in subjective quality and reduction of sleep disorders, but the use of sleep medications increased during the period analyzed.Downloads
