Abstract

The concept of inflammation as a localized phenomenon that neutralizes an aggressive agent has acquired a broader meaning. In this context, the role of macrophage cells is relevant due to their high phagocytic capacity and the destruction of phagocytized agent. Considering the importance of the macrophage in the unfolding inflamatory process, many stimulants have been considered to increase the activation independently from leucocytic system. The glucan, a polysaccharide derived from fragments of the wall of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a compound that has shown effective in vivo experiments. In this work, it was evaluated the influence of this molecule on inflammatory cells of the peritonial socket. The results had shown a marked enhance in the distribution capacity and of the phagocytosis of the active macrophages over the Klebsiella pneumoniae as a direct effect form the glucan, compared with the control group. As the total number of cells from the peritonial cavity, it was not observed a significative enhancement compared with the control. The results show that the glucan has the capacity to activate the inflammatory cells in the peritonial cavity and easily promote the destruction of any invading agent.
