Abstract

Introduction: The snakebites represent a significant public health problem in Brazil due to the morbidity and mortality that they cause. Objective: To describe the epidemiology of snakebites in RN. Methods: The information about snakebites occurred in the state of RN from 2007 to 2011 were collected in Sinan. Results: A total of 2.106 snakebites cases were registered; and these accidents occurred more often in June, July and August. Most of the accidents were caused by Bothrops; males and individuals 20-34 years of age were the most affected; 52.85% of the injured were treated within three hours after the bite; 83.47% of the accidents were clinically classified as mild or moderate. The municipalities with the highest number of recorded accidents were Natal and Mossoró. Eleven deaths were recorded. Conclusion: The state of the RN showed a high number of accidents and deaths by snakes when compared to other states and regions of Brazil.
