Understanding the meaning of emotions and feelings in autistic individuals during aquatic activities

Introduction: Autism is a developmental disorder that consists of changes in the central nervous system, causing behavioral problems. However, the practice of swimming has been helping with the socialization of these individuals. Objective: To analyze the emotional manifestations influenced by aquatic activities in autistic children. Methods: A descriptive study of qualitative nature was carried out. The study included six children who regularly attend Fisioclínica Casa Forte, Recife (PE). The instruments used were a socio-demographic questionnaire and a script of semi-structured interviews and observation. Results: Before entering the swimming pool, the children showed anxiety; but, afterwards, they showed enthusiasm, happiness and calmness. At the end of class, 50% of them did not want to leave the pool, suggesting interest in staying in class. The participants interacted more with toys than with each other or with the teacher. Conclusion: The work done in a playful way provided the children with a pleasant environment, contributing to their psychomotor and emotional development.Downloads
