Abstract

Recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU) is one of the most frequent pathological conditions of the buccal cavity. Its aetiology is still ignored but local, systemic, genetic and immunopathological factors were associated to this condition that is clinically separated in three types: minor or vulgar, major and herpetiform. The diagnosis of recurrent aphthous ulceration is made through clinical examination because complementary exams are not sufficient to its confirmation. For being a lesion of multifactorial character and of ignored aetiology, its treatment is quite controversial and, in general, palliative consisting in the use of analgesics, corticoids, antimicrobials and immunomodulators.
