Abstract

Introduction: The Kaatsu training method aims to induce muscle hypertrophy. Objective: To investigate the different protocols used in conducting Kaatsu training and analyze possible vascular and hemodynamic effects caused by the method. Methods: Therefore, we performed a systematic review of the literature in the SciELO virtual library and in Google Scholar, using the descriptors: resistance training, vascular occlusion, thrombosis, Kaatsu, hemodynamic effects. Results: Only eight papers that described the training protocol used in Kaatsu method were found. The main results found, after training with occlusion, were muscle strength and cross-sectional area increased. Conclusion: At the same time that the Kaatsu method is reported to cause muscle hypertrophy, studies demonstrate that this training increases the risk of developing venous thrombosis, congestive heart failure and hematological diseases.
