Abstract

Most of the Non-Cardiogenic Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVA) happens due to the formation of atheromas as a result of an atherosclerosis involving the carotid artery. Hypertension, smoking, obesity and sedentary life are some of the predisposing factors for the formation of atheromas. As a result, there is a decrease in the vessel lumen which alters the fl ow of blood and may provoke the CVA. These are found in panoramic radiographies and when calcified they are observed as a radiopaque mass in the soft tissue area between the intervertebral space C3 and C4. The patient must be guided to consult a neurologist after this identification. As a literary review, this paper has as objective the guidance to the identification of atheromas in patients susceptible to CVA.
