Abstract

The treatment of condilar fractures is one of the most controversial issues in the area of maxillofacial traumatology. The literature describes two types of treatment for these cases – the conservative and the surgical. The conservative therapy together with physiotherapy can take good functional and aesthetic results, reducing the inconveniences of a surgical procedure, like facial scars and neuroparalysis of the facial nerve. The surgical treatment however is necessary in some cases as for example, dislocation of the condilar process, foreign bodies in the condilar region an unsuccessful occlusion after conservative treatment. Despite of the possible technique difficulties, a good anatomical region knowledge and a cautius surgical procedure must minimize the complications and give excellent results.
