Abstract

Lag screw (LS) procedure is being successfully used in fixing mandibular fractures since 1970 when it was first described by Brons and Boering. This procedure allows the reduction and the stability of fractured stump through the fixation of screws, which are installed through bicortical perforation trying to join the fragments, and to put pressure on the surface of the fracture by the traction carried out by the screws. The stability given by this method allows the patient to return immediately to his activities, maintaining the stability even under functional pressure releasing the postoperative maxillomandibular fixation. The procedure is simple to be accomplished being the screws stabilized by intra-oral approaches with excellent esthetic results, with reduction in the use of material and, consequently with cost reduction, being therefore a safe and reliable method to treat fractures of the anterior mandible.
