Abstract

Nasotracheal aspiration is an invasive resource that aims at removing tracheobronchial secretions and enabling lung ventilation. The objective of this study is to verify in practical clinic the reactions and alterations of vital signs and the evolution of patients who have undergone aspiratory technique. A sample of forty individuals has been selected and their cardiac frequency, respiratory frequency and arterial pressure have been measured twice: before the procedure and ten minutes after its end. The respiratory frequency increased in average from 28 tO 30 RPM (P = 0,05). During the procedure, 22 patients presented dipnoea, 18 tachypnoea, 17 hipoxia and 15 agitation. Concerning the evolution of patients, 15 received high hospital, 11 passed away, 5 were transferred to another hospital unit, 4 needed mechanical ventilation and received high hospital later and 1 needed mechanical ventilation but passed away later. We conclude that nasotracheal aspiration can be considered as a safe and simple tool of bronchial hygiene.
