Abstract

Introduction: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) may help restore lung function after gastroplasty. Objective: To compare the effects of CPAP with two different devices, on pulmonary function and prevalence of atelectasis after gastroplasty. Methods: 36 volunteers were randomized and allocated into 2 groups to receive CPAP: one using microprocessed equipment and the other through a flow generator, in addition to conventional respiratory therapy. Pre-operative and on hospital discharge were performed spirometric test and chest X-ray. Results: There was a significant reduction (p <0.05), in the postoperative period, of the slow vital capacity (SVC) and of the inspiratory reserve volume (IVR) in both groups. The tidal volume (VC) and the expiratory reserve volume (VRE) did not present significant differences (p> 0.05). In the comparison between groups, there was no significant difference (p> 0.05). Regarding the prevalence of atelectasis, both had an index of 16.6%. Conclusion: The application of CPAP, regardless of the device used, associated with conventional respiratory physiotherapy, was effective in maintaining VRE and VC in the postoperative period of gastroplasty, thus contributing to a low rate of atelectasis.
