Abstract

Objective: compare the physical fitness of participants in resistance training and gymnastics. Method: The participants are elderly enrolled in the classes of resistance training and gymnastics of an extension program. To evaluate the physical fitness, physical tests of the Senior Fitness Test - SFT were used. The manual grip force was verified using a manual dynamometer. The data collection performed with the elderly at the beginning (March) and at the end of the year (November) of 2015. The statistical treatment conducted through descriptive and inferential analysis. Results: the improvement in the strength of the lower limbs (p=0.006), upper limbs (p=0.022 and p<0.001) was found in gymnastics when comparing the beginning and the end of the intervention. In resistance training, is the improvement of physical strength abilities of upper limbs (p=0.042) and flexibility of lower limbs (p=0.043). Conclusion: Both modalities offer significant gains in the physical fitness of the elderly.
