Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is incident in the elderly. Surgery stands out as a treatment, with the possibility of nerve lesions responsible for sensitive alterations. Objective: to evaluate the effects of physical therapy on cutaneous sensitivity and thermographic map of elderly women in the postoperative period of breast cancer treatment. Methods: We evaluated 9 women before and after 15 physiotherapy sessions, through Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments and the thermographic camera. The Wilcoxon and Spearman correlation tests were used. Results: After the intervention, there was an increase in temperature in all quadrants. There was no significant relationship between temperature and sensitivity. Regarding the sensitivity before and after the intervention, the difference was significant in the external superior (p = 0.038) and lower external (p = 0.007) quadrants of the preserved and upper external breast of the compromised breast. There was no correlation between the operated and non-operated region in relation to sensitivity and temperature. Conclusions: The intervention promoted an increase in the local temperature, inducing an improvement in the sensitivity threshold of the patients.
