Abstract

In the context of promoting health, there are effective methods of preventing the disease carie, among them are the chemotherapeutic agents fluorine and clorexidina. The objective, in this study, was to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial potential of four fluoride varnishes and one of veneer of clorexidina. From samples of infected dentin, 30 deciduous molars were grown on BHI and sown in four means of cultivation in which were placed discs of filter paper with the varnishes tested. Among the tested varnishes, the Cervitec® presented more bactericidal activity and bacteriostatic, while the fluorine Protector® presented the lowest antimicrobial action. In this study, it is suggested that the most effective method in preventing carie is the combination of educational guidance methods towards oral hygiene and the application of fluorine varnishes and clorexidina, for they have generated optimistic results in the maintenance of oral health.
