Quality of life and quality of sleep in heart failure

Introduction: Heart failure (HF) is a complex clinical syndrome characterized by the inability of the the left ventricle to pump enough blood into the body. Among the clinical characteristics of HF are the low quality of life and quality of sleep. Objective: To relate quality of life (QOL) and sleep quality (SQ) with functional capacity of patients with HF and healthy individuals. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study in which 21 patients with HF (group HF) and 21 self-reported healthy individuals were evaluated. The QOL and SQ, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) were measured. Results: A better QOL and SQ were observed in the HF group compared to the control group (p<0.05). We found positive correlations between FC and AE with distance walked on 6MWT (r = 0.475, p = 0.034) and (r = 0.620, p = 0.004), respectively. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that the HF generates negative impacts on the QOL and SQ of the sample studied.
