Abstract

There is a worldwide tendency in the increase of the incidence of type 2 diabetes in the childhood and adolescence. Besides the predisposing risk factors for the disease, children lifestyle changes have been cooperating for the increase rates in the last years. Physical inactivity associated with food modification habits have contributed for the childhood obesity epidemic. Both in developed and developing countries the increase of obesity prevalence in the child is considered the highest risk factor for the increase of the type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes mellitus in children is similar to adult, and its characteristics are insulin resistance and alterations in pancreatic betacell. Analyzing this transitional period, the objective of this exploratory bibliographic study is to identify factors related to children lifestyle which have contributed to the increase of the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in childhood.
