Reinforced Ceramic Systems and their indications

Abstract

This paper reviews the recent developments in the fabricating process of metal-free ceramics by analyzing the structure of PROCERA®, IN-CERAM, IPS EMPRESS and IPS EMPRESS II. The resistance of some materials is being of great interest for clinicians; therefore many researchers are studying these ceramics. The technical advance as a result of the efforts done trying to enhance dentistry, allowed the development and the introduction of ceramic materials. These materials emerged to eliminate the problems inherent to metal-ceramics.The results of laboratory researches show an adequate bio-mechanical behavior of these systems. Therefore, the possibility of restoring different segments of oral cavity with improved esthetics and oral health reestablishing smile’s harmony should be taken into consideration. Despite all positive points, it is necessary to mention that the success of the restorative treatment will be assured when the patients are pleased, without endangering the longevity of the installed prostheses. In these situations, longevity will be a result of the selection of the material as well as some inter-dependant factors, such as the correct indication and ability of execution. The ability of execution includes crown preparation, selection of luting cement, and patients follow up. The ability, esthetics knowledge, know-how of the laboratory workers and their efficiency in communicating with the dentist will be of great importance in obtaining a restoration that mimics dental elements with an optical interaction with adjacent soft tissues.
