Abstract

It is estimated that 90% of the world population is affected by stress. The stress process is divided in four phases: alert, resistance, almost-exhaustion and exhaustion. Nursing is considered one of the most stressful professions because it treats the life of the people and theirs suffering, being the service of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) one of the most stressful in view of the high complexity. In this study, it is verified the stress level in undergraduate assistants and technicians of nursing of an Intensive Care Unit. It was applied to 20 students a quantitative descriptive field research using a structured questionnaire and the instrument of ISSL. It was verified that 75% of the interviewees present stress, prevailing the resistance phase and the psychological symptoms. It was concluded that working in an Intensive Care Unit is stressful, compromises the health of professionals, and because of this is important to have a better life quality controlling stress.
