Objectives: This study proposes, based on the adaptation of the analytical framework by Truyens et al. (2014), to understand the organization of athlete’s career support in five Brazilian sports confederations.
Methodology/Approach: This quantitative-qualitative research was conducted in three stages: adaptation, refinement, and application of the instrument by Truyens et al. (2014). The time frame was the 2013-2016 Olympic cycle.
Originality/relevance: In view of the lack of specific indicators for the Brazilian context, this work intends to contribute to studies on the management and sports policy, analyzing and identifying specific characteristics of the internal resources of sports organizations, as well as policies related to support athletes and their careers.
Main results: The results pointed to a heterogeneity in the pattern of execution and development of actions that address the support to the athlete's career, which can be associated with two factors: a) the absence of a structured sports system; and b) the autonomy attributed to sports entities.
Theoretical/methodological contributions: The empirical analysis of the resources applied to support the athlete's career can provide a series of managerial implications, to allow managers to make strategic decisions related to the development of athletes in Brazil.
Social contributions: These findings highlight the importance of understanding athlete career support and considering that the application of organizational resources must be linked to athletes' needs. This depends on the emergence of a sports culture concerned with the development of athletes and not just with results.
