Introduction: Unstable surfaces (US) can be used in resistance training in order to promote greater stimuli of the neuromuscular system. Objective: To verify the effect of different strength intensities of squatting on stable surfaces (SS) and unstable surfaces (US) on electromyography activity (EMG) and perception of effort (PE). Methods: EMG and PE of 15 men trained to squat on SS and on US with randomized loads were verified. Results: Regarding the EMG, there were no significant differences between loads on SS and US. The PE was higher in the 60% 1RM condition on the US when compared to 40% on the US and 50% on the SS. Differences were also found in the condition of 70% of 1RM on SS when compared to 40% on US and 50% on SS. Conclusion: The squat, even with a lower load, performed on the US produces similar EMG activity to what it does on SS. On the other hand, the PE at moderate intensity was higher on the US.
