Abstract

It is believed that language and cognition are involved with the etiology of stuttering, although there is no explanation about the way they are related to the manifestations of its symptoms. In this article a possible explanation about the relation between stuttering, language and cognition is proposed based on Vygotsky’s socialhistorical theoretical framework. His work has been systematically ignored by those who devote their efforts to the understanding of stuttering nature. In this article of strictly theoretical nature, it is stated that it is possible to integrate some concepts from Vygotsky’s theoretical framework with some proposals of explanations about the cause of stuttering.
