Effect of the Pilates method in flexibility, quality of life and level of pain in the elderly

Objective: To evaluate the influence of the Pilates method in the flexibility, level of pain and quality of life in the elderly. Method: In this study, 31 elderly women were divided into two groups: Control Group (n=17) and Pilates Group (n=14). The Pilates Group performed training with the Pilates Method and the control group received lectures. The evaluation consisted of specific tests of pain (Visual Analogue Scale), flexibility (sit-and-reach, popliteal angle) and quality of life (SF-36), at the end of the eight weeks were reassessed. Results The Pilates Group showed improved flexibility in Sit and Reach test (p=0,033), evaluation of Popliteal Angle Right (p=0.015) and Left (p=0.0027), decreased pain levels (p=0.0187) and maintaining quality of life. The control group did not present significant difference. Conclusion: The Pilates method can help in reducing the level of pain, increasing flexibility and maintaining the quality of life in elderly women.
