Abstract

The modular approach has been applied with good performance in the automotive industry and in the computer manufacturers that traditionally use Lean Manufacturing. But what is its effect on Lean Manufacturing? Is modularity only restricted to these sectors? This paper answers these questions through a literature review and the use of the affinity diagram and the tree diagram together with the correlation matrix. In the results it was verified the use of modularity in the manufacturing of industrial machines, residences, buildings, airplanes, appliances, toys, bike, software among others. These results show that modularity can be applied to many types of manufactured products. Regarding Lean Manufacturing, the modularity has a positive effect on this application helping to meet some of the Lean's goals such as lead time reduction.
