The use of information technology (IT) has lead to an increased generation of electronic waste because the fast pace of technology innovation creates product obsolescence in a short period of time, thereby resulting in life cycle reduction. This paper presents the development of simulation models for the evaluation of environmental and financial impact of the extension of the life cycle of personal computers by their reuse and remanufacturing. For the system modeling, system dynamics methodology was used, implemented through Vensim simulation software. For experimentation, verification, and validation, two scenarios were defined: an optimist one (with high rates of waste reuse) and a conservative one (with lower rates of waste reuse). To facilitate the experimentation and analysis, the model design comprised three sub-models, with the following designations: Acquisition/Waste, Remanufactured PC, and Benefits Evaluation.
