Brazil is the largest producer of sugarcane in the world. The state of Paraiba (PB) has the third-largest acreage extension of northeastern Brazil; however, its productivity is the second-lowest. The aim of this study was to identify and prioritize the problems encountered in the production of sugarcane in the state of Paraiba (PB) in Brazil, in order to generate premises for creating incentives and for developing locally and nationally. Thus, we made a review of the literature and interviewed local producers to identify the problems. We also interviewed a technical agricultural expert, applying the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method to prioritize the problems. Just deregulation and high costs represent 60.31% of relevance by being connected to other problems. Finally, we proposed specific public policies that can alleviate more than one problem, such as reducing the tax burden on inputs.Downloads
